Summary: Two undermanned US Army artillery batteries and a rifle company of the First Cavalry Division (Airmobile) guarded Landing Zone Bird located in Binh Dinh Province on South Vietnam's eastern coast. Shortly after midnight, three entire battalions of North Vietnamese regulars burst out of the darkened jungle and began to swarm over the landing zone. The struggle for control lasted only about an hour. This book is the story of that hard fought battle and about the 150 GI's who repelled 800 heavily armed enemy soldiers. Told by the man who pioneered the use of firsthand, on-the-scene interviews with men who actually did the fighting, Bird is more gripping than any fictional account of the war in Southeast Asia. Reprint of 1968 edition.
